This International Women’s Day 2023, we celebrated Indigenous women as life-givers, wisdom keepers, and leaders while denouncing violence against women and Mother Earth. Across the Amazon, Women Defenders organized virtual gatherings, press conferences, assemblies, and marches to call attention to the continued attacks against their rights, lives, and territories and called on the world to amplify their voices and solutions. We’re sharing photos directly from those celebrations with you.

In Ecuador, Indigenous leaders organized with delegations from the Coast, Sierra, and Amazonia gathered in Quito on Wednesday for the 8 million women’s march:

Women carried out a ceremony and lit a candle in solidarity with people struggling in neighboring Perú, in solidarity with the slain defender Eduardo Mendúa, and with the women’s movement:

A delegation of Mujeres Amazónicas, a collective of Indigenous women defending the rainforest against extraction in the Ecuadorian Amazon, joined the women’s march organized by CONFENIAE in Puyo. Amazonian women also traveled to Quito to join a national women’s march led by CONAIE.

The National Association of Ancestral Indigenous Women Warriors of Brazil (ANMIGA) celebrated International Women’s Day as the day of their founding two years ago. This year, they commemorate this historic day with the theme: “Women of Biodiversity: Strengthening the Roots and Voices of our Ancestors.” More than ever, they want to be recognized as holders and protectors of Mother Earth.

Brazil media organization Midia NINJA shared this video of federal deputy Célia Xakriabá sending this message: “The transformation of the country will not happen if not for the hands of all women. #8M in Brasilia!”

International Women’s Day, which traces its history to women resisting capitalism and autocracy, is a call to action for all of us to celebrate and center women’s contributions to the protection of the Amazon and our Earth! We amplify their call to take action this entire month and pay it forward as much as possible. You can take action in solidarity with women on the front lines here by signing a timely petition to defend the Amazon, and then sharing it with friends and family.

You can also support women defenders by donating to Amazon Watch or starting your own fundraiser.
