Belém, Brazil – As COP30 convenes for the first time ever in the Amazon, Amazon Watch and its allies will be on the ground in Belém do Pará amplifying the voices of Indigenous leaders and climate defenders from across the Amazon Basin. Our team and partners will be available for interviews throughout the conference to discuss the urgent need for a global commitment to make the Amazon a territory free of oil, gas, and mining, and to center Indigenous sovereignty, climate justice, and real transitions away from fossil fuels.

Why Amazon Watch is at COP30

COP30 is taking place at a defining moment for the planet – and in the heart of the world’s largest tropical forest, which scientists warn is nearing an ecological tipping point. Amazon Watch’s presence in Belém reflects our call for governments and corporations to abandon extractive agendas that threaten both the Amazon and global climate and biodiversity goals.

Our delegation will highlight:

  • The critical role of Indigenous Peoples as the most effective protectors of the forest.
  • The need to end Amazon crude and stop financing fossil fuel expansion.
  • The rise of organized crime and illicit economies driving deforestation and violence in the region.
  • Infrastructure megaprojects such as the Ferrogrão railway that threaten communities and biodiversity.
  • The recognition of the Rights of Nature and Indigenous-led frameworks for planetary repair.

“COP30 must mark a turning point, from promises to action, from extraction to regeneration, and from political speeches to Indigenous sovereignty,” said Leila Salazar-López, Executive Director of Amazon Watch.
