In Ecuador, the government’s response to recent protests and a national strike called by the Indigenous movement has turned violent, leading to militarization, arbitrary arrests, censorship, and attacks on Indigenous groups, journalists, and citizens exercising their rights.
U.N. Special Rapporteurs also warn that fast-tracked reforms – including merging the Ministry of the Environment with Energy and Mines and weakening safeguards for protected areas – would expand oil and mining extraction on Indigenous lands.
We urge President Noboa to stop the violence now and guarantee due process and accountability in accordance with Ecuadorian and international law.

President Noboa:
We call on your government to immediately end all violence and repression and to cease the persecution of human rights defenders, Indigenous peoples, journalists, and citizens exercising their legitimate rights. Ecuador must uphold human rights, equality, and the rule of law, as guaranteed under its constitution and international commitments.
We further urge you to investigate and sanction all human rights violations, including acts of racism, humiliation, and violence, such as the forced cutting of Kichwa youths’ braids.
It is imperative to open good-faith dialogue with Indigenous organizations, civil society, and human rights institutions to restore trust, justice, and respect for fundamental freedoms.
