In recent weeks, several large financial firms have enjoyed public praise after coming out with new commitments to environmental sustainability (Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, BlackRock). But a new 50-page report out from Amazon Watch reveals the true hypocrisy of these institutions. Five of the world’s biggest financial firms – BlackRock, HSBC, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and Citigroup – are pouring money into crude oil extraction in the western Amazon, despite explicit opposition from Indigenous groups on the ground and the worsening of the climate crisis that such activity promotes.

Building People Power to End Investment in Amazon Crude is a 4-page refresher for activists who want to better understand the role that major financial institutions play in escalating the climate crisis. It includes detailed data from the latest Amazon Watch research on the total debt and equity financing provided by the five major firms listed above to companies extracting crude oil from the western Amazon and directly violating Indigenous rights in the process.

We hope this 4-pager can be a helpful tool for grassroots activists and organizers. Please share widely!
