Over the last few years, many of you have taken part in our campaign to demand that state-owned oil company Petroperú end its operations on Indigenous lands throughout the Amazon, and specifically in Block 64.
With your support, we targeted financiers, demanding an end to investments in Petroperú’s operations. We protested in front of the Vanguard headquarters alongside Indigenous leaders from the Achuar and Wampis peoples. We also accompanied these same leaders to speak directly to bank representatives, explaining the negative impacts of oil operations in their territories.
Our collective actions have caught Petroperú’s attention! They’re listening to you, and they’re spending time, energy, and resources to try to manipulate a narrative that we all refuse to accept.
In April, Petroperú sent us a new letter insisting that its occupation of Block 64 is fully compliant with legal standards and that it has community approval to operate. As we know, this is not true! They continue to enter territories without Free, Prior, and Informed Consent and fail to remediate environmental harm from oil spills.
As this struggle continues, David Peas, the Vice President of the National Federation of the Achuar of Peru, just sent us this personal message of gratitude and continued resistance. The Achuar and Wampis peoples of the Peruvian Amazon are thankful for your support and ongoing solidarity.
In the upcoming months, Petroperú will seek to raise millions of dollars to finance its Talara Refinery Modernization Project, which has the capacity to process up to 95,000 barrels per day. We must continue the fight to interfere with these investments in Amazon destruction!
