Oil Spill Causes a Disaster in the Amazon

February 19, 2016

Fish, vegetation and rivers are covered with black spots. The pictures show areas of Chiriaco (Amazonas) and Morona (Loreto) due to the oil spills that occurred in last two weeks due to pipeline breakdowns.

The spill has reached the Chiriaco River, a tributary of the Maranon, and the people of nearby communities are afraid to consume those waters.

El Comercio reached the Inayo ravine, where about 300 people are working to clean the oil spill. According to estimates by Petroperu, about 3,000 barrels spilled into two sectors of Loreto and Amazonas.
