In the year 2001, the U.S. based multinational oil company Occidental of Colombia, OXY, acknowledged publicly the discouraging results to its much anticipated oil bonanza of Gilbraltar 1, in sacred U’WA territory.
Today, the Colombian state oil company ECOPETROL continues the work that OXY started. Because of this, we the U’WA, after studying in detail our origins, our history, the clear violations of our basic laws, and the violation to the fundamental rights and environmental laws given in the political constitution of 1991 and by International Law; violations committed by the Colombian State and Ecopetrol, can’t allow for these outrages to continue with total impunity.
In response, the general assembly of our communities, from March 18 to the 22nd of 2004, and following the call of our Mother Earth and our major traditional authorities WERJAYAS, holders of the borders of the heart of the world,
We must denounce that:
Since February 2004 to date, the national company Ecopetrol is in the process of gas burning and crude extraction of small scale in the SIRIRI block, without any written agreement with the U’WA’s high council.
The contamination being generated by the gas burning is causing grave health problems to the indigenous community U’WA, and creating grave environmental problems that add to climate change, and also is producing big landslides.
Due to the above-mentioned impacts, we call on the national and international community, Environmental movements, and human right organizations, to call on and demand from the Colombia government the respect for the human and environmental rights of the U’WA indigenous people, and to order Ecopetrol to immediately suspend gas burning and crude extraction.
The U’WA’s high council does not have any agreements or negotiations with the Ecopetrol Company. Therefore, the rumors that this council has signed agreements for oil exploitation in our territory, are absolutely not true and are hurting our communities.

[Espanol]COMUNICADO A LA OPINIÒN PUBLICA NACIONAL E INTERNACIONAL.
En el año 2001, la empresa multinacional estadounidense de petrolero Occidental de Colombia OXY, reconoció públicamente los resultados desalentadores frente a la expectativa de la bonanza petrolera de Gibraltar 1, en territorio sagrado U`WAS.
Hoy la empresa ECOPETROL, continúa el trabajo iniciado por la oxi. Por eso los U`WAS, luego de hacer un estudio minucioso de nuestro origen, de nuestra historia y de las fragantes violaciones de nuestras leyes mayores y de los derechos fundamentales y ambientales consagradas en la constitución política de 1991 y de las leyes internacionales por parte del estado colombiano y de ECOPETROL, no podemos permitir que estos atropellos se sigan cometiendo en la mas completa impunidad.
Por este motivo la asamblea general de nuEstras comunidades, realizadas entre el 18 y el 22 marzo de 2004, y atendiendo el llamado de nuestra madre tierra y de nuestras máximas autoridades tradicionales WERJAYAS, sostenedores de los mojones del corazón del mundo.
Debemos denunciar que:
Que desde el mes de febrero de 2004 y hasta la fecha la empresa nacional ECOPETROL esta llevando a cabo en el bloque SIRIRI un proceso de quema de gas y extracción de crudo en pequeña escala, sin que se haya firmado acuerdos con el cabildo mayor U`WA.
Que la contaminación generada por la quemadura de gas esta causando graves problemas de salud a la comunidad indígena U`wa, y a la vez generando graves problemas ambientales que inciden en el cambio climático y además esta provocado grandes deslizamientos de tierra.
Por todo lo anterior hacemos un llamado a la comunidad nacional e internacional a los movimientos ambientalistas
Y las organizaciones de derecho humanos para que se pronuncien y exijan al gobierno colombiano el respeto a los derechos humanos y ambientales del pueblo indígena U`WA, y que ordene a la empresa ECOPETROL la suspensión inmediata de la quema de gas y extracción del crudo.

Las autoridades tradicionales y cabildo mayor U`WA se permiten comunicar a todos lo medios de comunicación y a la opinión pública que:
El cabildo mayor U`WA no tiene acuerdos o negociaciones con la empresa ECOPETROL, por lo tanto los rumores de que este cabildo haya adelantado acuerdos de explotación petrolera de nuestro territorio, tema que no es absolutamente verídica, y que sí esta haciendo daño a nuestras comunidades.
