Protesters Demand the Release of Pepe Acacho and Other Imprisoned Leaders

February 8, 2011 | Photo Gallery

Early in the morning on January 31, police and military forces accompanied by helicopters arrested Pepe Acacho and three other Shuar leaders on charges of terrorism and sabotage. In September of 2009 they led protests against a law privatizing water sources, and these charges stem from clashes that occurred at that time. Acacho and two others were then flown to the Garcia Moreno prison in Quito, and protesters there are demanding their immediate release.
