Chevron Denies Ecuador Claims

February 1, 2005 | Energy Intelligence

ChevronTexaco said on Monday it “objects in the strongest possible manner to the irresponsible and unsubstantiated statements made by AmazonWatch and Steven Donziger” in their Jan. 28 news releases regarding an environmental lawsuit against the company in Ecuador.

Environmental group AmazonWatch and Steven Donziger, a member of the legal team for the plaintiffs against Chevron, claim the company resorted to using “junk science” to hide an “environmental disaster” in Ecuador, where a Texaco subsidiary is accused of dumping 18.5 billion gallons of oil-laden water in local rivers (OD Jan.31,p9).

Chevron said the statements made by AmazonWatch and Donziger are “misleading, deceptive, not supported by the scientific evidence in the technical reports recently submitted to the court and simply false.”

Chevron added that its effort for arbitration of the issue in the US is not dead and is in fact proceeding.
