Join San Ramon Valley students on a trip to the Amazon Rainforest
August 7-17, 2004 (tentative dates)
-visit pristine Amazonian rainforest
-see wild animals (monkeys, parrots, toucans, and pink river dolphins)
-learn about medicinal plants
-help with reforestation
-visit indigenous communities
-deliver much needed school and medical supplies
-learn about the threats to the Amazon and what you can do to help
Below is a proposed itinerary*. The cost for a 10-day trip is $1,500, plus airfare (appx. $700). Applications due July 9 (deadline extended).

The trip led by Amazon Watch, a non-profit organization that works to defend the environment and rights of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin.
In the last 7 months Amazon Watch has organized three delegations to the Ecuadorian Amazon, including one for San Ramon Valley community leaders (Rev. Steve Harms, Pastor Margaretta Dahlin-Johannson, Rabbi Dan Goldblatt and John Dalrymple, President of the Contra Costa Labor Council) last November. *Proposed Itinerary for Delegation of San Ramon Valley Students to the Ecuadorian Amazon
Day 1- Travel from San Ramon to Quito, Ecuador
Day 2- Travel from Quito to Lago Agrio via air.
Travel to Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve in northern Ecuador.
Day 3- Visit the forest and the lagoons in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. Cayman viewing at night.
Day 4- Visit with Siona family and shaman. Go fishing for pirañas.
Day 5- Travel out of Cuyabeno to the Cofan community of Dureno.
Meet with community and then travel back to Lago Agrio.
Day 6- Meet with members of the grassroots watchdog group, the Amazon Defense Front, in Lago Agrio and begin “Toxic Tour “(ie…tour of areas affected by oil industry, including ChevronTexaco ). Travel to Coca.
Day 7- Toxic Tour in San Carlos
Meet with students at the local high school and visit the community clinic where nurse Rosa Moreno works.
Return to Coca.
Day 8- Visit another community near Coca. Return to Quito in the afternoon.
Day 9- Day in Quito to explore the colonial section of Quito and visit the new Guayasamin museum, Capilla del
Hombre.
Day 10- Leave Quito. Return to San Ramon
***A 14-day trip can also be arranged. This would give the group an opportunity to visit another town, on the way back to Quito, called Otavalo; river rafting; and/or another day in the forest to plant trees.***
