Justice Now!
Join the worldwide chorus calling for justice by urging Brazil’s Supreme Court to rule on lawsuits against the Belo Monte Dam!
On this International Woman’s Day, 24 woman stopped traffic in the city of Altamira, Brazil for two hours in protest against the Belo Monte dam and the sharp increase in violent crimes committed against women as the project has developed.
Teenagers to elders claimed their rights as women against violence, prostitution, sexual abuse, and chaos created by the construction of the dam.
This entire week they gathered several times around the city to have their voices heard and denounce the crimes committed by Norte Energia, CCBM (the dam-building consortium) and the Brazilian Government. Together they declared their shame on having Dilma as President and are asking again for Justice Now!
“The Xingu region is on national and international news today not because of its beauty and rich resources, but because of the human trafficking financed by President Dima Rouseff,” said protestor Analaide Barbosa.
“The mothers of Altamira are losing their kids to prostitution and drugs. Belo Monte did not bring jobs as promised, only violence,” added Maria Dulce Gonçalves.
Antônia Melo, Coordinator of the Movement Xingu Alive Forever, who has been the main target of espionage in the past few months, finalized the event by resonating a clear message of resistance: “All the crimes that are being committed are done with BNDES money, which means public money of the Brazilian Nation. We will not accept that. We will continue denouncing. We are not afraid and we will keep resisting against all odds. We are demanding that the Supreme Court paralyze Belo Monte and comply with the laws. We are demanding Justice Now!”
