You Rushed to Defend the Amazon at a Critical Tipping Point, but the Fight Is Not Over

November 26, 2019 | Eye on the Amazon

This year, over 100,000 fires raged across the Amazon, burning more than 80,000 square kilometers of rainforest and indigenous lands and threatening the integrity of this fragile ecosystem vital to Earth’s climate. Because of Bolsonaro and financial backers like BlackRock, the threats are escalating. At the same time, Ecuadorian security forces were violently repressing indigenous protestors who continue to demand an end to new oil and mining projects on their lands.

As the “lungs of the planet” burned and police attacked indigenous women and children, the world rose up to ACT for the Amazon. In immediate response to the crisis, your support provided over 65 emergency grants to fight both physical and political fires across the Amazon, including indigenous firefighters in Brazil and Bolivia, emergency relief to Ecuador, and sending a delegation of indigenous leaders to twelve European nations.

The movement to defend the Amazon and indigenous rights is growing in strength as climate activists have rallied to say that we must defend the Amazon NOW! Since August, thousands have united in front of Brazilian consulates, embassies, and the corporate offices of conflict commodity financiers such as BlackRock during global days of action for the Amazon.

There’s much more than can be told in one video, but we hope this one helps you continue your work to grow the movement and defend the Amazon. Indigenous Earth Defenders are still at risk and the killers of Paolo Paulino Guajajara remain at large. We must not allow this violence to continue. Amplifying the voices and solutions of indigenous peoples is the best way to prevent the next catastrophe. The awareness you create will help protect Earth defenders at risk. Please share their story and grow the movement!
