Q’Orianka Kilcher, who stars as Pocahantas in the film The New World, newly released in Lima, will brief the media on her recent trip to the northern Peruvian Amazon rainforest. Ms. Kilcher, who spent July 1 – 9 traveling by river to the remote Rio Corrientes region, will speak about the critical situation facing indigenous peoples after years of contamination from petroleum activities in the area.
Of indigenous Quechua and Huachipaeri descent, Ms. Kilcher made the decision to visit the area to learn about the serious health crisis and environmental devastation affecting the Achuar people given her interest in indigenous peoples and environmental issues. Her production company, IQ Productions, is considering making a documentary on the subject to highlight the need to bring about immediate change.
Ms. Kilcher will be joined by Achuar leaders from the affected area, as well as indigenous leaders from the national indigenous Amazonian federation, AIDESEP and representatives from human rights organizations Racimos de Ungurahui and Amazon Watch who guided Ms. Kilcher’s trip. Ms. Kilcher’s visit to the Amazon follows the premier of her new film in Lima last week, where she invited Peruvian indigenous leaders to join her at the red carpet event.
