Tell Ecuador and Peru: Stop the Cross-Border Oil Expansion!

Seven Indigenous nations in both Ecuador and Peru are fighting to End Amazon Crude! They just announced firm opposition to a cross-border oil deal that threatens their lands, cultures, and the global climate.

The agreement would open the door to drilling in some of the most biodiverse rainforest on Earth and send oil through Peru’s notoriously leaky North Peruvian Pipeline.

At the same time, the California Senate just approved a resolution to investigate how to end the state’s imports of oil from the Amazon, and Governor Newsom needs to take the next step from here.

Call on the Presidents of Ecuador and Peru to cancel their cross-border oil deal and Governor Newsom to take meaningful action to end California’s reliance on Amazon crude.

Dear President Noboa, President Boluarte, and Governor Newsom:

I am writing to express my deep concern about the announced cooperation agreement between Petroecuador and Petroperú to facilitate cross-border oil transport from southern Ecuador through the North Peruvian Pipeline.

This project threatens Indigenous territories, violates international standards for Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC), and endangers one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. The Indigenous Nations of the Achuar, Wampis, Chapra, Sápara, Shiwiar, Kichwa, and Andoa, alongside AIDESEP and CONFENIAE, the biggest indigenous organizations in each of their countries, have publicly and unequivocally rejected this plan. They were not consulted and have made clear that this oil deal is incompatible with their rights and survival.

Additionally, on August 25 the California Senate approved a resolution to investigate how the state government can support ending the importation of oil from the Amazon. California remains a top destination for Amazonian crude, but the people of California are demanding that this change.

I urge you, President Noboa and President Boluarte, to cancel this agreement and respect the demands of the Indigenous peoples. I also call on you, Governor Newsom, to take meaningful action to end California’s reliance on crude oil from the Amazon, as a necessary step in protecting human rights and combating the climate crisis.

The world is watching. Please act in solidarity with Indigenous defenders and future generations.

Sincerely,
