Ecuador’s Indigenous Peoples Reach Quito After 600-km March for Water, Life, and Dignity

March 22, 2012 | Kevin Koenig | Photo Gallery

Thousands of indigenous peoples led by CONAIE (Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador) converged on Quito today, culminating a fifteen-day march demanding a new water law, land reform, and an end to open pit mining and new oil concessions. They seek a national dialogue on land rights and natural resources, and are calling President Correa’s “Citizens Revolution” the same business-as-usual, neoliberal policies imposed by previous right-wing presidents.
