Amazon Watch will have a busy spring organizing and hosting three delegations of indigenous leaders from the Amazon as they attend the annual shareholder meetings of Chevron, Occidental Petroleum (Oxy) and ConocoPhillips.

The leaders will demand that Chevron and Oxy clean up the messes they left behind in the Ecuadorian and Peruvian rainforests respectively, and will also be urging ConocoPhillips and Oxy not to press ahead with plans to drill on indigenous land in Peru. The leaders will also participate in various speaking events in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Houston.

Chevron’s annual general meeting will be held in San Ramon, California, on April 25, 2007. Oxy will hold its shareholder meeting on May 4 in Los Angeles. In Houston, ConocoPhillips will hold its meeting on May 9.

Delegation participants will include Goldman Environmental Award winner and former Ecuadorian presidential candidate Luis Macas; Achuar indigenous leader Andres Sandi; Sarayaku indigenous leader Patricia Gualinga; Secoya indigenous leader Humberto Piaguaje; Guillermo Grefa, Kichwa from Rumipamba; and Pablo Fajardo, the plaintiffs’ lead attorney in Chevron’s landmark Ecuador trial.

Chevron is now just months away from a potential multi-billion dollar damages bill over the corporation’s unnecessary contamination of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Oxy has still managed to avoid cleaning up a similar environmental disaster it left on Achuar lands, in northern Peru, and may now be planning more drilling. Meanwhile, ConocoPhillips has bought oil blocks in Achuar territory in Peru and appears set to drill too.
