What: Rally and mass march in the streets to protest the corporate influence over the Democratic Party and Al Gore’s ties to Occidental Petroleum. Oxy plans to drill on the U’wa people’s sacred lands in Colombia.

Who: Rally speakers to include: Elders from the U’wa people of Colombia; Tom Hayden, California State Senator; Actor Cary Elwes (Princess Bride), Dave Campbell of the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union Local 8-675 (PACE); Terri Swearingen, Goldman Environmental Award Winner; Randy Hayes, President, Rainforest Action Network; indigenous leaders and other special guests.

When: Monday, August 14, 2000 Opening Ceremony & Blessing by Indigenous Leaders: 8:30 AM Rally: 9 AM March: 10 AM

Where: Rally begins at Pershing Square, 5th and Hill, Los Angeles followed by a march to the Staples Convention Center

Why: The relationship between Gore and Oxy is exactly what’s wrong with politics today. Al Gore’s closest and oldest corporate sponsor is Los Angeles-based Occidental Petroleum, the corporation that brought this country Love Canal and now threatens to drill on the U’wa people’s sacred lands in Colombia. While Gore makes promises of environmental commitment on the campaign trail, he continues to choose his cozy relationship over taking action to stop an imminent human and ecological disaster in the forests of Colombia.
