Urge Brazil's Supreme Court To Uphold Indigenous Land Rights!

Brazil’s Supreme Court is poised to rule next week on the legality of a government proposal that, if approved, would set back land rights for indigenous peoples by decades and threaten their very survival. The proposal would only recognize the land claims of indigenous peoples that have continuously occupied their territories since Brazil's 1988 Constitution, despite the fact that many communities were brutally driven off their ancestral lands by the military dictatorship that ruled in the preceding decades.

Send a message to the Supreme Court to uphold indigenous land rights!

To: Supreme Court Ministers –

I urge you to vote against the "marco temporal" opinion and, in doing so, uphold indigenous peoples' original and prior right to their lands, as stipulated in the Brazilian Constitution.

To: Supreme Court Ministers –

We are aware that you are due to rule on the "marco temporal" opinion by the Advocacia-Geral da União, adopted by President Temer on July 19th, 2017.

Your ruling will have a profound effect on the future of Brazil's indigenous peoples, especially on their land rights, which are crucial to their well-being and survival as peoples.

I trust that you will vote against this legal opinion and, in doing so, uphold indigenous peoples' original and prior right to their lands, as stipulated in the Brazilian Constitution.

Sincerely,
