Peru: Six Peasants Massacred, Urgent Protection Needed for Indigenous Leaders

Gunman massacred six peasant neighbors of the Shipibo community Santa Clara de Uchunya in the Peruvian Amazon on Friday, September 1st. The presumed killers are "land traffickers" who are attempting to take over the territory by threats and intimidation. Now is the time for all allies of indigenous rights to take action and demand that the Peruvian government guarantee the safety of the community and indigenous leaders and address the underlying conflicts that led to this crisis.

In June we issued an urgent action calling on Peruvian authorities to take preventative measures against death threats, to investigate illegal deforestation in the region, and to bring legal action against the oil palm company OchoSur. The government is stalling, and now we must step up the pressure.

Send a message to Peruvian authorities now to help prevent further attacks!

Peru: Six Peasants Massacred, Urgent Protection Needed for Indigenous Leaders

6,533 people have taken this action so far.

We are deeply concerned by the September 1st massacre of six peasants in Nueva Requena, Ucayali province. We stand with the Shipibo community of Santa Clara de Uchunya and support their demands that:

  • A high level multi-sector commission implement urgent actions to protect the life of the campesinos and indigenous communities and stop the deforestation;
  • The Public Ministry conduct speedy investigations into all cases related to illegal land trafficking and deforestation, sanctioning the direct and indirect authors; and
  • The Regional Government of Ucayali's Agrarian Office stop issuing of certificates of possession within indigenous peoples territories and instead issue a title to Santa Clara de Uchunya for the requested area including their ancestral territory.
