TO: Mr. Manzoni, CEO,
Talisman Energy
Talisman Energy's operations in the remote Peruvian Amazon are threatening the Achuar people's way of life. We are deeply concerned about your company's continued refusal to heed the demands of the Achuar people of the Pastaza and Morona River basins, and withdraw from their ancestral homeland immediately.
Operating without the free, prior and informed consent of the Achuar people has led to a potentially dangerous confrontation at Talisman's drilling platform in May 2009 and protests by Achuar leaders at Talisman's shareholder meetings in 2008 and 2010. The continuation of operations is not only an abuse of the Achuar's rights and traditional decision-making structures, but also represents an ongoing financial, legal, operational and reputational risk for your company.
It is deeply concerning to me that Talisman continues to justify the legitimacy and legality of its operations in Block 64 by asserting it has the consent of eight local communities, when in fact, the regional Achuar federation, FENAP, representing over 40 communities and responsible for decisions affecting Achuar territory in its entirety, has expressed staunch opposition to Talisman's activities in the region.
If Talisman wants to keep its social license to operate around the world and win respect from environmental and human rights organizations, as well as from the entire global community, it should respect the Achuar's collective voice and withdraw from their territory.
Sincerely,
Your Name
