Sarayaku protest

The People of the Zenith, SARAYAKU, once again are present in solidarity with the call from distinct social sectors, the country’s indigenous communities and social movements to defend human dignity, nature and biodiversity against the devastating threat of oil exploitation in our lands.

The march for the “Dignity of the Peoples” kicked off by the Confederation of Indigenous Nations of Ecuador (CONAIE), exposed the true identity of the government of Rafael Correa. The discourse it promoted for eight years at national and international levels, which favored its image as a socialist government and defender of rights for indigenous peoples and Mother Nature, has proven to be a sham.

Hidden behind the new and modern Constitution, disguised as noble and peaceful, and as a defender of democracy and the rule of law, the current government created a scenario that is more than favorable for new natural resource extraction projects.

In the name of combating imperialism and neoliberal capitalism, it pushed a devastating project to exploit oil and mega-mining natural resources, in which the victims are the indigenous peoples who have inhabited these vast territories for millennia.

Using lies and deceit to dress itself up as a good government, it has utilized Article 57 of the collective rights for free, prior, and informed consultations in good faith to give legitimacy to a consultation that, in reality, is simply informational. With that, they hope to take a step toward committing crimes against nature and genocide of the peoples who live on these lands. All of the rights won by the indigenous nationalities have been repealed, just as the system of bilingual intercultural education, indigenous health services, economic funds, and political organization.

The Ecuadorian Constitution for a Pluri-national and Intercultural State has remained unfulfilled. To the contrary, the project of the so-called Alianza País party or Citizens’ Revolution aims to ignore social and cultural diversity. It promotes a hegemonic project intended to make the history and culture of the ancestral peoples disappear by means of a single system that is foreign to our realities.

The National Government accuses us of being violent and disrupting its project. On the contrary, the voice of protest from the peoples that demands political reform has been criminalized. With this propagandistic justification, the Government carries out selective persecution, generating violent actions in various situations, which results in the violation of our most basic human rights.

During the March for Peoples Dignity on August 13, 2015, the Government prepared an impressive display of security forces, police, and military. Violent confrontations with citizens ensued and resulted in numerous people disappeared, imprisoned, tortured, and dead across the country.

For this abuse, the same Government hired a paramilitary group called ARUTAM, the same name of the Amazonian Shuar warriors. But it turns out that they are retired and foreign military men—an elite group prepared for war and riot control against demonstrators and social protests.

Under these extremely serious circumstances, protest mobilizations continue in distinct sectors of the country. The National Government dismisses, in a perverse manner, this uprising in order to continue systematically advancing the abuse and violation of human rights.

The authorities and Ecuadorian courts execute legal rulings in a personal manner, abusing their public power and ignoring due process which threatens the legal rights of the citizenship, creating an authoritarian and dictatorial environment.

We—the indigenous peoples, defenders of biodiversity, the rights of nature, and the living rainforest—demand respect, tolerance and the return of our own rights. All peace-loving Ecuadorians are fighting for social justice, economic equality, respect for the rights of nature, conservation of the environment, and for just and transparent laws.

We demand that the government respect the Constitution of the Ecuadorian State and the Rule of Law. As such, we request international organizations such as the IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights), Amnesty International, the Office of the UN High Commissioner, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the Catholic Church of the Holy Father Pope Francis intervene before the Ecuadorian Government and initiate a true dialogue without impositions, but rather real agendas of good faith.

For five hundred and twenty-five years we have been victims of violence and displacement, and we cannot accept disguised brutality under a government of hate and vengeance that repeats itself daily.

No to violence and hate.
No to authoritarianism.
No to xenophobic racism.
No to legal vandalism.
No to state terrorism.
No to deceit and lies.
No to the division of the peoples.

Yes to clear and transparent justice.
Yes to respect for the Constitution of the state.
Yes to respect for the rights of nature.
Yes to a healthy environment and land, fertile and abundant.
Yes to respect for the Living Rainforest.
Yes to life.
