Indigenous March to Quito

Yesterday, thousands of indigenous people marched to Quito and began a national strike against proposed constitutional amendments that would curtail indigenous rights and allow President Rafael Correa to stay in power indefinitely.

CONAIE, the national indigenous confederation of Ecuador, one of the continent’s oldest and most powerful indigenous organization with a long history of grassroots mobilizations also demanded the liberation of indigenous leaders.

International press been injured by police and some face deportation. The strike has already spread across Ecuador and major roadways have been closed by the mobilization. More social movements are joining the march and CONAIE’s call on the government to end police brutality and detentions.
