When I founded Amazon Watch in 1996 to protect the rainforest and advance the rights of indigenous peoples, I never imagined how far it would take us and how much we would achieve.
The last eighteen years have been an incredible journey. Together we have helped protect millions of acres of pristine rainforest and have stood with indigenous peoples as they fought for and strengthened their rights. With our partners, we have won globally significant victories for rainforests and corporate accountability.
As with all things, change is a natural part of evolution. That is why I am pleased to announce my transition from Executive Director to President of the Board of Amazon Watch in January 2015.
It has been truly an honor and privilege to serve as the executive director of Amazon Watch, and I am excited to help usher in a new chapter for our organization. Our board is initiating an international search to find the next Executive Director – someone who will devote their passion, talent, vision, and energy to Amazon Watch and its mission.
As Board President, I will be working with the new Executive Director, the board and our extraordinary staff, supporters, partners and allies in the Amazon to advance our mission. I will continue to serve as a global advocate for the Amazon and indigenous rights, and I look forward to sharing my work with you here at Eye on the Amazon.
I am deeply grateful for the tremendous support that you – our global community – have given to Amazon Watch and our indigenous colleagues throughout the years. Thank you for everything you that have contributed, and I look forward to working with you for many years to come.
