Rivers to Río will be a human banner – a work of “living art” of massive scale – led by indigenous peoples and composed of hundreds of human beings who will use Rio’s Flamengo Beach as their canvas, painting a vision of a clean energy future with their bodies that will be visible from the sky.

When: Tuesday June 19th, 13:30 – 15:00

13:30 – Press Conference on location featuring Amazonian indigenous leaders voicing perspectives on Rio+20, mega-dams in their territories, and the “green” economy.

14:00-15:00 – Aerial and location photo opportunities available upon banner formation.

Where: Flamengo Beach, south of People’s Summit. Along the beach in front of CUT tent and large red balloons – Tent F, Cúpula das Aguas e Florestas. Near Hotel Gloria.

The image will call global attention to the threats large hydroelectric dams – such as the Belo Monte – pose to rivers, forests, and livelihoods, while dispelling the myth that hydropower is clean, renewable energy. An estimated 1000+ participants will gather to form a compelling visual message that will be photographed from above.

World-renowned aerial artist John Quigley will choreograph the unique living art display and message. Working with Brazilian indigenous groups, he has designed a visual message inspired by affected communities in the Xingu and pointing to modern energy alternatives the world should look to for solutions. The work will be composed of hundreds of representatives of indigenous peoples, civil society organizations, social movements and other grassroots actors.
